The right comparison between an AI voice agent and a human receptionist is not "which is better." It is "which is better for which call, at which volume, at which hour, at which cost." This essay is a side-by-side analysis, with the operator's decision tree at the end.

On cost: a 60-second voice call costs about $0.007 in model inference at 2026 token prices. A human receptionist answering the same call costs $0.30-0.80 fully loaded. The 50-100x cost differential is what makes voice agents viable for inbound call volume that no human team could staff. Below about 5-10 calls/day per agent, the human is cheaper. Above that, the agent is materially cheaper.

The operator's decision tree: if the call volume is high, the script is stable, and the call is repeatable, the voice agent wins.
